“A living neighborhood packed with art, culture, and innovation”
In just a few short years, the former warehouse district of Wynwood has become the arts hub of South Florida. It started with murals, street art, and graffiti – encouraged, unconventionally, by the neighborhood’s early developers, spawning vibrant spaces teeming with outdoor art.
Today, there are more than 70 galleries and museums, dozens of new restaurants and bars, and hundreds of companies, creators, and innovators working in a place that just feels alive.” Greater Miami and the Beaches
Wynwood by Wheelchair
This ex-warehouse area covered in street art is home to galleries, an indie-cinema, and private art collections.
Well known for the Graffiti Walls that are a visual treat in and of themselves, this is a good place to start your rolling tour of this area. Parking is not easy, and we only identified one accessible parking space…but there are parking lots for $10 throughout.
The streets are dusty and muddy from work still being done, and the ramps are in need of work to make them fully usable, so you may want to bring your electric chair, big wheel tires or freewheel wheelchair attachment.
Once parked, the action is pretty concentrated, so there is much to see, eat and drink within a 4-5 block radius.
There are still some locations that do have a single step in but feel free to knock on the door and ask for access. The area is new and they are being tested and they need to see that we DO exist on wheels. That is why they need to (before they are sued and required to pay more to ADA attorneys create equal access.
“Wynwood is a major revitalization project that has successfully turned a district that was once a place of homelessness, crime, and decay into a multimillion-dollar development project that highlights artists, small business owners, boutiques and fun! “
If you can’t gain access, take a photo of yourself at the location and let us know…we can help make an impact to change this for the next person. The point is, we can’t go backward…and they just may need to be educated or reminded 😉
Start at the Wynwood Walls and consider a Tour from Miami’s Best Graffiti Guide Ryan who can show you all the history and insights into the Art Form that is the center of Wynwood’s culture. A constantly rotating mixture of artists and their highly regarded creations.
Try Panther Coffee and sit under an amazing tree and enjoy a fresh cup of ground coffee and treat. Panther Coffee is ADA compliant and is a Specialty Coffee Company. Roaster, Retailer, and Wholesaler specializing in the small-batch roasting of coffee beans and the preparation of coffee beverages.
If you crave Mexican food Coyo Taco is the place to be, however, you can only sit outside as they need to be “reminded” to create accessible seating inside and to #DroptheHighTops. But the tacos are legendary and you can sit at Panther Coffee next door if it is too hot at their outdoor tables.
Try an incredible Margarita at Miami Mojito Company and enjoy the beautiful gardens in the courtyard with accessible tables high enough for most wheelchairs to clear.
The Wynwood Diner is a must see as well for their cocktail infusions and syrups. Their cocktail menu is purposely created to pair with their food. It includes boozy milkshakes and dessert drinks like the “Anchor,” which blends Sailor Jerry rum, pineapple, house-made banana purée, and whipped cream.
Joey’s Italian Cafe is a modern Italian café with traditional flavors and offers an outdoor garden & terrace as well as an invitingly elegant indoor dining experience, both with accessible low tables.
As you can see, the Wynwood neighborhood has attracted a number of very interesting restaurants, bars, breweries, art galleries, and boutiques, it is a neighborhood on the rise and should definitely be on your bucket list.
